Modern Foreign Languages

The Pembroke curriculum aims to provide a high-quality languages education which will foster students' curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world.  Students will learn to express their ideas and thoughts, and learn to understand and respond to it speakers, both in speech and writing.

Learning another language gives the possibility to students to learn aspects of another culture and this will make them more open-minded and understanding towards other people.  Learning another language encourages students to know more about a country, to go and visit the countries where the language is spoken, to want to perfect that language, it allows them a new way to communicate on an international scale and allows the potential to read great literature in the original language. The aim is that students become increasingly confident at speaking, reading, writing and understanding the language.

Throughout KS3 we use the Viva Spanish textbooks as a guide, incorporating a variety of listening, reading, speaking and writing activities. We study and revisit concepts and items of vocabulary, which allow students to continually build on their prior learning and progress. We believe that in offering Spanish, the second most spoken language in the world, we are providing students with life skills; allowing them to build tolerance and respect towards other languages and cultures, and the opportunity to converse with others in the globalised world in which we live.

We also aim to incorporate a range of Spanish cultural elements from across the Spanish-speaking world, broadening students understanding of both culture and language.

In addition to this, we offer a range of enrichment activities such as Spanish tapas cooking, a visiting Spanish language theatre company and foreign visits.

Our aim is in line with the school ethos to create lifelong chances and global citizens of the world.
