Chainsaw sculpture plan!

Tree trunk to be transformed to celebrate the Charter of the Forest

This morning sculptor Mick Burns visited Pembroke to work with the year 10 GCSE art class. He has been commissioned to sculpt a knight from a large sequoia trunk using a chainsaw, for permanent display near our main entrance outside the school. He was kind enough to come in and talk to the students about how he works and discuss the types of tools used and pieces he creates. He then let them loose whittling potatoes into a range of forms using blunt knives, the way he began sculpting wood in his younger years. Mick will be unveiling our sculpture on 6th November as part of Pembroke's official opening, as we become the first Charter of the Forest school in the UK. The day encompasses a range of forest themed activities where students will be willow weaving, examining hedgerow habitats and investigating the properties of our trees under the microscope. The Woodland Trust and a huge number of external guests are invited and we will be joining in the 'lantern walk' at Lincoln Castle that evening too. Mick will send us photo's of our 8ft tall sculpted knight as it develops - so keep an eye on both twitter and facebook for snippets of his creation over the next two weeks.
